Our History

Ten people interested in forming a dog training club first met August 17, 1961.

At that meeting the first Board of Directors was elected. The name “Companion Dog Training Club” was chosen at the next meeting. “Of Flint” was added October 4, 1961.

Since that time we have had many “homes”. We held classes on Wednesday evenings at the Flint National Guard Armory on Chavez Drive for many years until the unfortunate events of 9/11 changed the National Guard’s policy of renting space to civilian groups.

We then moved to a church for approximately one year and then to the former MacGillvary Buick building on the East side of Flint where, for the first time, we offered classes on more than one evening.

Now at our new location on 3440 Torrey Road we’re very fortunate to have 12,000 square feet devoted entirely to dog training throughout the week.

3440 Torrey Road, is just off Bristol Road at the I-75 interchange.

  • The first training class was held at “Homestead Hall” September 11, 1961.
  • The club held it’s first match September 22, 1963.
  • The entry fee for our first match was $1.25 /dog and 50 cents for a second entry.
It is the purpose of this club to:

“Encourage training and exhibiting of both pure-bred and mixed breed dogs.  Encourage good sportsmanship.  Promote and hold sanctioned matches, competitions, trials, and events under the rules and regulations of the American Kennel Club.”
